5 Energy and Money Saving Tips

1. Try turning your heating down by 1°C - you won't notice this heat wise, but it will help reduce the heat you are using and your bill.

2. Keep the heating on constantly during the winter, and only turn it on and off using the timer control, rather than the thermostat.

3. Replace old boilers - those more than 15 years old.  This will ensure you have a more efficient and reliable boiler and could lower heating bills too.

4. Cover up your letterbox to save heat escaping and use draft excluders around the bottom of doors, particularly the front door where a lot of heat can escape.

5. Try not to cover your radiators with towels, clothes, or large pieces of furniture (such as a sofa), as this absorbs the heat and you end up having to turn the heating up!

8 Things you never knew About Sludge!

Sludge is the main cause of central heating and boiler breakdowns as it clogs up the working/moving parts such as circulation pumps, diverter valves, flow switches, and heat exchangers.

Sludge will reduce circulation and heat transfer making your central heating system inefficient by reducing the bore of the pipework, and building up in the radiators, and radiator valves.

Sludge is a form of rust and will over time rot metal components such as heat exchangers in boilers and radiators on your central heating system.

Your boiler will be working longer to heat a dirty central heating system as the sludge will absorb the heat and this will increase the time it will take to transfer the heat from the radiators to the room.

A dirty central heating system can be cleaned by power flushing the system with industry approved chemicals.

A clean central heating system is an efficient central heating system; we recommend the following to ensure that heating remains efficient and cost effective.

If your central heating is drained for maintenance, make sure an inhibitor is added to prevent sludge build up in your radiators.

Both combination boilers and system boilers can be protected from sludge build up by fitting a Magnaclean on the central heating return pipe.  The Magnaclean is designed to capture metal particles that build up in a central heating system before it reaches the boiler.

Other money saving tips

Limescale reducers fitted to the incoming mains to a combination boiler will reduce limescale build up and prolong the life of the plate heat exchangers.

If you have a combination boiler, turn your heating on for a couple of minutes if there is a long spell of hot weather, this will ensure that the diverter valve moves across and prevents it getting stuck in the hot water position.

The most cost effective way to run your central heating system is to keep the heating on continuous and use the room thermostat to turn the heating down whilst the house is empty.

Thermostatic radiator valves (TRV’s) fitted to all radiators allow you to reduce the heating in the rooms that are not being used, saving energy and reducing costs.

Lagging central heating pipework in areas that are naturally cold, such as garages and lofts will reduce heat loss and save money.
